Terms used in earthwork in Road construction.

Borrow Pit

 i. Borrow Pits
ii. Lead & Lift
iii. Spoil Bank
iv. Balancing Earthwork

Borrow Pits

Small pits were dug parallel to the road alignment on both sides of the road formation to draw the extra earth required to fill in an embankment.

Lead & Lift

Lead And Lift

Lead is the average horizontal distance between the center of excavation to the center of deposition. The unit of lead is 50m. Whereas Lift is the average height through which the earth has to be lifted from the source to the place of spreading or heaping. The unit of lift is 2 meters for the first lift and for every extra lift is 1 meter.

Spoil Bank
Spoil Bank

Extra earth excavated and to be dumped on the roadsides in the road in cutting. Dumped in regular shape for future use.

Balancing Earthwork

While constructing a road, it is desirable for a segment of road that the quantity of earthwork in cutting and embankment should be nearly equal if the soil available is good for use. If possible, keeping in mind the limiting values of gradient and curves, the alignment is so fixed to have an equal quantity of earthwork in cutting and banking which is known as ''Balancing earthwork''.
